How to read a day/night meter

2 min read

Old day/night meters have two readings for electricity in daytime and night time hours. They are simple to read with minimal effort whether they are mechanical or electronic. Mechanical meters have two displays, while electronic meters have one button to switch what is displayed.

Reading a mechanical meter

On a mechanical day/night meter there will be two separate analogue displays, along with a revolving dial that controls those displays. The top display shows the cumulative daytime electricity usage, and the bottom display does the same for night time hours.

  1. Read all of the numbers on each display from left to right.
  2. Ignore any numbers on the right hand side in red, or which are in a red box.
  3. Include any 0 digits at the start of the reading on the left.

Reading an electronic meter

On an electronic day and night meter the electricity usage is shown on the display screen. You can read this by:

  1. Reading all the digits on the display from left to right.
  2. Include any 0 digits at the start of the reading on the left.

The blue button is used to switch between different readings for total electricity consumption, day usage, and night usage as well as other information.

  • Press once: This will bring up the current date
  • Press twice: This will bring up the current time
  • Press three times: Brings up your total meter reading
  • Press four times: Brings up your day hours reading
  • Press five times: Brings up your night hours reading
  • Press six times: This tests the display

Getting recent electricity usage

If you want to know how much electricity you have used in a billing period from your day/night meter, you simply have to subtract the value of the previous meter reading from the latest one.
