How to tell who your electricity supplier is

2 min read

If you want to switch electricity suppliers you need to know who your current supplier is. This can be done easily by looking at old bills, speaking with someone who previously held the account, or asking ESB Networks.

Check your electricity bills

The simplest way to find your electricity supplier is to look at your most recent bill, whether on paper or email. This will give you the name of the provider in multiple locations.

Ask your landlord

If you are renting a property then you might not be the one directly receiving the electricity bills. Speaking to your landlord to determine who your current supplier is to find out if you can get a better deal.

Contact ESB Networks

ESB Networks keeps track of which electricity suppliers are providing service to each MPRN. If you don’t know your supplier you can contact the National Customer Contact Centre at 1800 372 757.

Look at your bank statements

If you are paying for electricity by direct debit then you should be able to tell where your money is going. Simply look at your bank statement and find your electricity payments, this will tell you who the money is being paid to.

Do you need to know your supplier to switch?

No you don’t have to know who your electricity supplier is to switch. As long as you have your MPRN then the company you are switching to will be able to find your current supplier. They can then handle the switch on their end.

Why it’s good to know anyway

Knowing who your supplier is helps to determine how much you can save by switching. With that information, price comparison sites like EnergySwitch can help you estimate your annual bill with your current supplier, and how much you will save by switching.

It also affects which electricity plans you can switch to in the first place. You won’t be able to switch to plans on your current supplier, unless they are meant specifically for existing customers.
