How to read your electricity meter

Reading your electricity meter is the simplest way to know how much electricity you have used. It is also the best way to verify that your bills are accurate and that you’re not being overcharged.
What type of meter do you have?
Electricity meters differ between newer smart meters, and older meters for 24hr or day/night electricity. What works for one meter will not work for another. Smart meters in particular have extra options for cycling through electricity usage and exports.
Submitting meter readings
If you don’t have a smart meter then you will need to submit meter readings to your electricity supplier if you want your bills to be accurate. Without this information you could get charged far more in estimated bills.
