Switching
Who is my current energy supplier?
3 min read
If you want to switch electricity, gas or dual fuel suppliers, you need to know who your current supplier is. This can be done easily by looking at recent bills or bank statements, contacting ESB Networks or Gas Networks Ireland, or asking your landlord.
Check your energy bills
The simplest way to find your energy supplier is to look at your most recent bill, whether on paper or email. This will give you the name of the provider in multiple locations.

Contact ESB Networks
ESB Networks keeps track of which electricity suppliers are providing service to each MPRN. If you don’t know your electricity supplier, you can contact the National Customer Contact Centre at 1800 372 757.
Ask Gas Networks Ireland
Gas Networks Ireland has a database of every gas supplier and who they are supplying by using each property’s unique GPRN. To find out your current gas supplier, you can contact Gas Networks Ireland’s customer care line for general enquiries on 1800 464 464. Just make sure to have your GPRN at hand.
Look at your bank statements
If you’re paying for energy by direct debit then you should be able to find out who you are paying. Simply look at your bank statement and find your electricity, gas or dual fuel payments. This will tell you who the money is being paid to, i.e. your current supplier.
Ask your landlord
If you’re renting a property, your landlord might receive the energy bills for the property. Ask your landlord who your current electricity or gas supplier is if you want to try to get a better deal.
Do you need to know your supplier to switch?
No, you don’t have to know who your current supplier is to switch. As long as you have your MPRN or GPRN, the company you’re switching to will be able to find your current supplier. They can then handle the switch on their end.
Why it’s good to know anyway
Knowing who your supplier is helps to determine how much you can save by switching. With that information, price comparison sites like EnergySwitch can help you estimate your annual bill with your current supplier, and how much you will save by switching.
It also affects which energy plans you can switch to in the first place. You won’t be able to switch to plans on your current supplier unless they are specifically for existing customers.
