How to find your MPRN

3 min read

Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) is a unique 11-digit code that you can find on your electricity bill, from your electricity supplier, or through ESB Networks.

Fastest ways to find it

Here are the quickest ways to get your MPRN:

  1. On your electricity bill
  2. From your electricity supplier online account
  3. From your ESB Networks online account
  4. Contact your electricity supplier or ESB Networks
  5. Ask a landlord or previous owner

Find it on your electricity bill

You can find the MPRN on the top right-hand corner of your electricity bill. If you use paperless billing, you can find it in the same place in statements sent by email.

Ask your electricity supplier

If the electricity account for the property is in your name, you can contact your supplier directly to ask them for the MPRN. If you have an online account with your supplier, then you should also be able to look it up there.

Ask your landlord or previous owner

The MPRN is attached to the property, not the user. So if you have moved to a new property, you might not yet know your MPRN. If you’re renting then you should contact your landlord, who should have it from previous bills. If you’re buying a house, then you can ask the previous owner to check their own bills.

Why you won’t find it on the electricity meter

You will not find the MPRN printed anywhere on your electricity meter. The codes on the front of the meter are the Meter RM and Serial Number. These are different from the MPRN but can be used to help get it from the ESB.

Ask ESB Networks

If you have the Meter RM and Serial Number, you can contact the ESB Networks National Customer Contact Centre on 1800 372 757 (Mon-Fri 08:30 - 18:00 and Sat 08:30 - 13:30). They should be able to provide the MPRN with this information.

Use your ESB Networks online account

If you have set up an ESB Networks online account, you can also use the Meter RM and Serial Number to find your MPRN via the ‘Find My MPRN’ service.

Why you need your MPRN

You need your MPRN to identify your property for services such as switching electricity providers. Without it, a new supplier can’t tell which property to switch.

You won’t be able to switch unless you know your Meter Point Reference Number, as it will be automatically blocked by the new supplier.
