How to tell what type of electricity tariff you have
2 min read
There are various electricity tariff types in Ireland: standard 24hr plans, nightsaver (day/night) plans, and a variety of smart tariffs with time of use rates at different prices. Here’s how to find out which one you currently have.
Check your electricity bill
There are two main places on your electricity bill that can tell you the type of electricity plan you’re on:
- Tariff name: In the account information section of your bill, it tells you the name of your electricity plan, which often indicates what type of tariff it is, e.g., Standard 24hr, EV Discount, or Standard Smart Tariff.
- MCC code: The MCC on your electricity bill tells you what type of plans you could have. MCC01 and 02 are 24hr and Day/Night, while MCC12 & 16 are for smart plans. MCC16 is required for EV, weekend discount, or free time plans.

Look at your electricity meter
If you have a mechanical or non-smart electronic meter for your electricity, then you must be on a 24hr or Day/Night electricity plan. Without a smart meter you cannot be on a smart tariff.
However, if you do have a smart meter, this doesn’t mean you’re on a smart (time of use) tariff. You can still choose 24hr electricity plans if you have a smart meter installed.
Use your supplier’s online portal
With your electricity supplier, you should be able to create an online account with them. In many cases they will also have an app.
Through the provider’s online portal, you should be able to view details about your account including billing history, usage, and details about your electricity plan.
